SEALANTS
How Do Sealants Work?
When the back teeth develop, irregularities in the chewing
surfaces of these teeth called “pits and fissures”
form. Even the best toothbrusher will not be able to clean
inside these areas since a single toothbrush bristle is
often too large to reach the bottom of the “pits and
fissures”. Cavities form in these tiny spaces because
food becomes trapped and allows bacteria to grow.
A sealant is a “plastic coating” that is applied
over the pits and fissures to create a smooth surface which
“seals” the plaque and food out.
Sealants have been used by dentists since the 1970's.
They are very effective in preventing chewing surface cavities,
(the most cavity-prone area on a permanent molar).
Sealants usually last several years.
They will be checked regularly at your child’s
6 month preventative appointments.
Reapplying the sealant
may be necessary if chipping occurs. It is important that
we detect any loss of sealant material early, therefore,
regular check-ups are very important!!!!!! |
